Pre and after-sales Frequently Asked Questions for ALCON brake kit

Q: How to determine the brake model and brake disc size?

1) First of all, brake disc size is determined by rim size

2) Further more, with data of original brake disc size, total area of pistons and brake pads, size of original brake disc, put all together  we're able to estimate a proper model for your vehicle

Q: What is floating disc system and its supremacy?

Alcon's floating disc system has been designed to allow thermal expansion of the disc throughout its life while minimising the tendency to judder.

Q: Difference between one-piece casting and split forging, their respective advantages?

Casting is a manufacturing process in which a liquid material is usually poured into a mold, which contains a hollow cavity of the desired shape, and then allowed to solidify.

Forging is a manufacturing process involving the shaping of metal using localized compressive forces.

Casting is most often used for making complex shapes that would be otherwise difficult or uneconomical to make by other methods. Forging can produce a piece that is stronger than an equivalent cast or machined part. As the metal is shaped during the forging process, its internal grain texture deforms to follow the general shape of the part. As a result, the texture variation is continuous throughout the part, giving rise to a piece with improved strength characteristics. Additionally, forgings can achieve a lower total cost than casting or fabrication.

One-piece disc is a disc cast in one piece with its hat or bell. This is the inexpensive way to manufacture a disc and is perfectly adequate for normal use. There are some tricks to the design to reduce distortion.

Q: How do lightweight brake kit improve car performance in good way?

Lighter brake forces come with lighter car weights.

Q: What is brake disc surface texture and how to choose it for performance?

The surface texture of a brake disc in some cases affects the braking effectiveness of a vehicle.

Taking ALCON products for example, C shape brake disc surface texture is for road cars, S shape brake disc surface texture is for racing cars.

Q: Is it able to choose brake pad in a brake kit? And what's good of the original brake pad.

Of course, every customer could choose their favourite brake pad for different requirements. The original brake pads are durable with less friction and noise.

Q: What is the difference between CAR98 and RC4, so as CAR97 and RC6?

These are all four pistons brake caliper. RC series are one-piece disc and have bigger brake pad compare to CAR series. There two series are also different in size of brake caliper, bigger brake pad for bigger caliper.

Q: How often or when do brake pads/discs need to change?

There's no particular or certain time. But we strongly recommend our clients to check brake pads/discs regularly. Normally when brake pads are only 20% left need to be changed, and brake discs require changing on basis of surface texture is solid or not.

Q: What are included in the warranty of ALCON brake kit?

All the accessories in ALCON brake kit have one-year warranty. Beside those consumbales such as brake pads.

Q: When to change brake line?

Brake line do not need to change unless it has situations such as oil leak or a sign of wear and tear.

Q: How to choose brake fluid and how do brake fluid affect on brake kit.

We recommend DOT4 for road cars. DOT5.1 for competition. And you need to check brake fluid regularly especially you live in some high humidty district.

Q: Why does newly installed brake kit need to bed in , and how to bed in?

Before using a new disk, all machining and preservative oils must be completely removed following the disc manufacturer's recommendations. Usually it involves washing with soap and water or using one of the proprietary "brake clean" compounds. The disc should then be mounted and checked for run out. It should be bedded in with a number of moderate stops with lots of cool off time between stops, gradually increasing the severity of the stops until the entire surface of the disc is evenly discolored. This will prevent thermal shock, distortion and the formation of "hot spots"

Detailed bedding process is contained in our instructions.

Q: Does the brake kit need maintenance? If so, how often or how many kilometres?

Calipers in brake kit require maintenance, and we recommend maintenance every 2 years or 50,000 kilometres.

Q: How to distinguish the authenticity of brake kit.

GUSTO is the one and only general agent in China. Every set of brake kit contains a unique security QR code, which can be scanned to check the authenticity. It's difficult to judge the authenticity with one single picture. But if our customer has a demand, we can check authenticity of your brake kit via express.

Q: What is the reason for the abnormal noise of the newly installed brake and how to solve it.

First of all, check whether the components are well installed, and should tell where are the noises coming from. Most of the abnormal noise is coming from the gap between brake disc and pad, sometimes it has something to do with brake disc surface texture. After all it requies further examination

Q: Would brake modification break original car warranty?

It won't. But it could break brake warranty in some area.

Q: Can road cars be modified with aftermarket brake kits, will it improve brake performance of road cars?

Of course you can, but you need should noted that aftermarket has no dust boots thus the exposed portion of the caliper pistons can not be prevented the ingress of dust and road crime.

To cope with such circumstance, ALCON provide two different brake kits for both aftermarket and racing, and racing kits for aftermarket. For example, CAR89 model is equiped with dust boots.

Q: What data need to be provided for brackets and hub customization?

New model to be developed requires car model and more data. For example, we need a virtual vehicle to analyze space which behind steering knuckle.

Q: Can brake disc rotor screws be replaced by other similar screws?

NO, the brake disc rotor screws is provided by ALCON which CAN NOT replaced by some other similar screws for safety.

Q: What should be aware of when installing the brake kit.

1) Whether the rim is suitable.

2) Whether brake kit parts are complete.

3) Find a well-reputated modification workshop

Q: How does brake disc size affect performance of braking?

Bigger brake disc size generates more brake power and cools faster.

Q: Would brake performance degradated with higher temperture?

Sure it does,Different brake discs and pads degradated differently.

Q:How to cool down brakes after aggressive-driving?

You mustn't stop for a long time, nor cool down with water after hard-driving. You should drive slowly around 10 mins to let brake discs cool down naturally.
